  • Kits, sampling and keyboard mode (basic concept and some more advanced thoughts)

    As someone who likes to slice up samples in more than 8 chops and play them all with my fingers without scrolling, or make a drum kit with more than 8 samples and do the same, it would be really useful to be in kit mode and just hit the keyboard button (just like in synth mode) to use the 16:8 grid instead of one column of 8. It seems like a waste not to make full use of the 128 pads for triggering (and recording, loading, etc.) samples and slices. I could imagine lots of possibilities for live use, playing multiple instruments without switching tracks (and playing an entire beat in real time with a single kit), chopping up vocals, using it as a soundboard, etc..
    It'd also be neat to see a quick slicing function where you non-destructively pre-slice while sampling by just hitting a series of pads at the moments you want the start points (each of which would also be the end point for the previous slice, except obviously the first one, and the last end point would be at the end of the sample). Again, the 16:8 grid would be ideal for this. And then obviously the start/end points could be adjusted to perfection afterward by turning the knobs (perhaps with the ability to toggle whether the end and start points should move independently of each other or stay stuck together). I think ideally this slicing mode should be able to create a choke group automatically (before recording, the select knob should be able to turn this function off and on, as well as change play modes and perhaps toggle a function that either automatically snaps start/end points to the nearest zero crossing or applies micro-fades to get rid of clicks).
    If this makes less sense on the page than in my head, I'll be happy to try to clarify or expand on anything.
    And if there's already a way to do some of this, feel free to inform me. I have yet to familiarize myself with everything the Deluge can do. And I'm not sure if I have the latest update; I should probably check.

    Okay, I've done some experimenting, and I don't see any numbers changing, but... my initial interpretation was definitely a bit off. It sounds like turning up the filter envelope sustain to the max really fast when I push the button, and then going back to whatever the gold knob is at (which is not necessarily the same value that's saved in the patch), and then it behaves really weird when I switch to a different patch. The lights seem to indicate that it's changed the cutoff to whatever that patch says it should be, but that's not what it sounds like. What I hear is the same cutoff I left the previous patch on, so it carries over. It's like it's re-reading the knob after disengaging this weird filter envelope sustain thing it's doing, and then re-reading the knob again when switching to the next patch.
    So that's weird, right? Or is my brain just not working properly because I should be asleep?

    Oh, and by stringing a couple USB cables together, I managed to try it with one different keyboard for comparison, and it appears to be the same behavior, except I have a bit more control, and it's definitely the filter sustain, somehow. I haven't familiarized myself enough with the deluge synth engines to know exactly how to get into every single possible parameter, and I haven't found one that's visibly affected, but that's what my ears are telling me (with the analog modeling synth, not with the FM, although it's affecting the brightness there too).

    as for adjusting pitch bend range: enter the deluge menu -> defaults -> bend -> change from 12 to whatever semitone you prefer, like 1 or 2.

    As insane as that would be...I'm not a programmer, but I can't imagine that would be possible (I mean, the triggers would just bunch together, right?). I could however imagine a hypothetical scenario in which a jog wheel could be made to control a single loop/audio track, scratching it out of and into sync with the other tracks. I'd imagine it would be complicated, though, but maybe technically possible if the deluge is powerful enough to do that kind of real time sample playback manipulation. If that is possible, it could basically make a loop track on the deluge behave like an SC500 scratch instrument (which...come to think of it...I think is open source also). If it can be done with two tracks mapped to different jog wheels on the same controller, with the crossfader controlling the mutes...hypothetically, that'd be pretty nifty. I have no idea how it would actually be done, though.
