Other than by changing the scale, is there a way to vertically zoom in/out in Clip View to allow the user to see a wider lowest/highest note range across the 8 vertical grid buttons in a column?

No, there’s no vertical zoom. Scale button is the only way to increase the range of notes in view. Although whole custom scales are possible, I believe they must still be a minimum of 7 notes per octave.
