I saw quite a few references on keyboard usb midi controllers compatibility but nothing on drum pads usb midi controllers, would something like Alesis sample pad 4 work over usb?

Yeah pads works but sometimes you have to check the velocity by default to adapt the volume of the samples (akai mpd 218)
