I find that moving around in modes moves my music from cliched to interesting.
If you aren't sure wether to upvote this, try scrolling thru the scale modes over your favourite composition. You will here interesting potentials.
This would also facilitate key changes.
Ps the Beatles often moved thru modes so it must have some merit. Cheers 😊
