How about a simple shortcut or settings menu option that uses a gradient across the grid to display the current / remaining capacity of the battery? As far as I can tell so far, the only battery indicator is the charging light... it seems like the grid would be perfect for a little LED battery life eye candy.
Just for an example, see the manual for the Novation Circuit. It has a nice display that indicates remaining battery life.
