Audio recording into arranger, why so convoluted?

It seems to me that recording audio directly into the arranger is much more convoluted than it needs to be, I thought that after setting up an audio track it would be as simple as selecting the pad in the position in the arranger where you want to record, hold that pad then press record, recording starts, then press stop when done.

Am I missing something?

To clarify I mean record at any selected section in the timeline, even better if the range of pads could be selected, so 1-4, or 5-12 or whatever and the recording starts on the first and ends after the last. The way that sequences are easily “painted” in made me think that audio could be recorded in this same intuitive manner, but it seems not to be the case, unless I’m not understanding it.
