Gate out triggers via a buffered mult, not directly

I'm connecting Deluge's CV and gate outs to a Behringer Neutron in various ways. One connection isn't working as I expect: when I connect a gate out to the Neutron's sample and hold clock input, it doesn't trigger. When I connect it to the Neutron's mult in, then connect a mult out to the S&H clock in, it triggers when it should.

The little slider near the gate outs is set to 5V. The Neutron manual claims the S&H clock will trigger at 3V and accepts -5V to 5V.

Any idea what's going on here?
