Automation across arrangement view?

I must be dumb, because I can't figure out how to do simple automation across an instrument in arrangement view!
How would I, say for instance, open a filter across multiple clips in arrangement view?

• press affect entire to access fx
• hit play and record
• turn knob

i assume what happens for you is that you can record automation but it is looped, each track instance has the same automation.

now, if the track (clip) is a white instance automation will be recorded to Arranger only. check out white instances in the manual.
if it is a normal, colored track automation is recorded to the track and you can hear it if you go back to Somg mode.

Press Shift and press the first step of a track in the arranger. The track becomes white, it is now a copy of that track and does not exist in Song mode.
