After a day of experimentation I conclude that the Del won't record on an empty track. In fact, recording did not work until I entered a Drum track. I guess some kind of quantizing goes on behind the scenes so it requires the rhythm?

In general the record mode only works about 1/2 the time. ????

Thanks! I'll give it a try. As yet I haven't figured out how to load samples. Once in awhile it works for me, mostly not.
