I saw that there is a way to solo whole clips from the song view by holding the up/down knob and pressing launch for the clip you want to solo, but don't see a way to do this for individual kit elements. Am I missing something? Or if not, is there plan to add this or a workaround for it?

It’s actually the horizontal, side to side, knob that solos clips in song mode.
There is currently no way to solo individual kit rows. You’ll have to instead mute all other rows to play only a single row.
If you’re looking to solo elements quickly like in performance, I’d suggest separating them into different clips that can be solo’d in song mode.
