Creating an open community platform?

In our community are a lot "hands" willing to help for a lot of things. Therefore I would like to ask if there is an interest from Synthstrom that we, the community, try to help to create a new, better manageable and open platform for Synthstrom and the community.
Just one example, there are a lot people that would like to join the beta program and help on the work for the final release. But unfortunately they have good reasons not to join facebook.

If there is an interest we could start a suggestion and evaluation discussion, where community people suggests projects with some evaluation (not just dropping URLs)

e.G.
1. Discourse (https://www.discourse.org/) as a free and open Forum Plattform
2. Write.as (https://write.as/) as a Blogging platform for articles from synthstrom and maybe articles from the community. Like medium.com
3. Social Network like Friendica https://friendi.ca/, Pleroma https://pleroma.social/ , Mastodon https://joinmastodon.org/ or some other as replacement for Facebook or Twitter
4. Gettogether https://gettogether.community/ or Molbilizon https://joinmobilizon.org/en/ as an event plattform, instead of Facebook or Meetup

And maybe we go further with
1. Peertube https://joinpeertube.org/en/ as an Youtube replacement
2. Funkwhale https://funkwhale.audio/ as a Soundcloud replacement

There are a lot more Infos from the site https://framasoft.org/en/ (France) about tools for the community.

The biggest advantage of such opensource tools is, that they already using or start using a shared communication protocol called AcitivityPub https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ActivityPub or just RSS feeds https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS to communicate or publish.

So, if there is any interest on creating such a platform, maybe the community can help with their experience, their knowledge and their motivation to help. Because 3 eyes see more than just 2 eyes ;)

May I ask your opinion @Ian_Jorgensen ?

Haha, I'm open to most things at the moment other than changing the beta testing platform, it's taken a lot of effort to verity the close to 500 current beta testers and being the eve of another round, having to go through all that again would be a massive pain right now.

I'm open to peoples ideas, but you have to realise, at the end of the day, the best platform for beta testing is the one that is convenient for Rohan and makes the job easiest for him. Haha, in all other areas we can think about "user experience", but, haha, for beta testing, I care about "rohan's experience", and yeah, it's working really efficiently and smoothly right now.

I know we talked about that in Berlin and I was thinking, maybe someone has a good idea that would suit your needs. If there is no project at the moment it's ok as well, because you two have to deal with it. But I thought it's worh a try and maybe it it could be a help.. :) And at the end it it's nothing that can be done in short time. :)

If you are interested into it. I produced together with a friend a podcast in german about alternative social networks. https://besser.demkontinuum.de/

I was just about to start a thread about a similar thing. I was basically thinking since we're going through an amazing update of the firmware, why not have an equal update of the community interface as well.

I would like to propose two things:

    1) Shutting down the Facebook groups: In addition to people not wanting to join Facebook, I find the search function on Facebook to be dismal at best. I frequently search for specific tips I know people have shared but the search function does not find them. As a result I have to make a redundant post. It's very difficult to reference things from the past there. Plus we can throw in all the political issues with Facebook.

    2) Replace this message boards software with the Discourse platform. These are the two communities I frequent the most online and they both use it for their forums:

    https://forum.orthogonaldevices.com/
    https://llllllll.co/

The amount of communication between developers and users is amazing, especially on the ER-301 forum and the way the beta firmware is tweaked and debugged there. It reminds me very much about the level of conversation between @Ian_Jorgensen / @rohan and the users, but in a substantially more elegant and useable forum. I recommend you take a second to check them out, they are really vibrant communities. I think having a Discourse platform as the main and singular forum for discussion around the Deluge would be beneficial for everyone.

The synthstrom message board and Facebook groups are like the equivalent of Deluge 1.0, whereas Discourse is 3.0. Ha! ;) Just throwing it out there.

That said, I totally get the hassle that Ian is talking about with the beta testing group and moving it over. Maybe there's a way of sharing a link with the beta group that automatically adds them to a group on a Discourse install.

I would be happy to volunteer in any way to make this happen, whether that be setting up Discourse or going through the beta user list, etc. :)

Cool, yeah, its in the "plans" to change platforms, unfortunately, it would just eat into other projects....there are a ton of other projects already rolling out alongside 3.0, I'm trying to avoid adding more things to that list.
We'll look at it for testing the next update, def not gonna happen for the testing of this one.

I can only imagine. Excited for those other projects as always!

As I said, if you're looking for volunteers for moderators or whatever down the line, I'm totally game to assist.

I will second (third, fourth) Discourse as a brilliant forum platform. I love the Lines forum!

I have recently ditched Facebook, so I can no longer access the Deluge closed group and Beta Tester group I was a member of. I would be interested in joining an alternative forum, particularly for the beta testing.

99% of Deluge user activity is on social media. 99% of FB is mass promotion.
This forum is for the nerds 🤓

Just to chime in that I also ditched Facebook a while back and would be happy to beta test down the road.

Just wanna say that I too hate Facebook. You'll see something new soon, no doubt!
