Emulate pitch bend with golden knob

4

I think it's a sort of missed ball not having any kind of pitch bend/pitch wheel control on Deluge though it has a decent synth engine:)

Here's an idea of how to emulate it with one of the golden knobs.

So currently the master pitch can be assigned to golden knob but its behavior is far from a correct pitch bend functionality.

The idea is based on OP-1 approach but slightly improved.

  • So the golden knob would change the pitch up or down depending on the direction it is turned in. Its center position is the 0 pitch change. This is the current behavior.
  • The pitch glides back quickly to 0 immediately when (or 10-20 milliseconds after) the movement of the golden knob has finished.
  • When the golden knob is pushed it keeps the pitch until it gets released. This would emulate when the player holds the pitch wheel and plays further with the pitch change on a keyboard.

Questions:
1. How pitch bend functionality can be accessed? Should it repace the current master pitch assignment on golden knob? Or should it be a new feature accessible by one of the free pads?
2. How is it possible to set range of pitch bend? Or sould it still be fixed to one octave?

    Fun idea.

    1.
Right now if you press on the knob while it has pitch control in a kit it does nothing. Seems like you should just hold the knob down then as you twist the pitch changes then when you release it reverts to the original pitch.

    2.
Not sure It makes sense to set a limit on this manually. Just to set a reasonable sensitivity on the pitch given you could turn it forever in theory. I think less changer per degree rotation than now. 1 rev/octave gives an accuracy of about .1 semitones and should work.

    • you could try with a midi controller that sends Pitchbend messages. According to the midi implementation chart SYNTH and KIT instruments should react to Pitchbend messages but havent tried, maybe it is just for MIDI clips.
    • golden knob: dont think there is a way to set a usual pitch bend range (1 octave). instead of directly learning pitch to a golden knob you could try modulating pitch with an envelope and control either the mod amount or some envelope parameters with a golden knob.

Using a midi keyboard having pitch wheel pitch bending operates as expected. However there's no option to set the pitch range.
My idea is about how to emulate pitch bend without the need of external controller. This would strengthen Deluge's compactness further, I think. The synth engine is great and Deluge could really benefit from built-in features of expressivity.
