Self extending length record Mode

88

I would love to see a mode on the deluge where you could start recording a synth line, and it would keep automatically extending the length of the passage to fit what you're playing, until you press stop record. If you have a long passage - e.g 8 bars or more - this would mean you wouldn't have to work out how many bars you were going to do first, and you'd be free to change plan or improvise the passage length on the fly.

I think if this is implemented, it should default to end the pattern at the end of a bar, and another mode to make it end the pattern exactly the step that you press stop.

Great idea. I've seen something similar (Alesis Micron) that ends at the nearest bar. So it's always about getting the end point tight like with looping.

This would almost be necessary for creating leads. Very important

Most grooveboxes could not do this... but the Deluge could! At last, near limitless space.

Maybe holding Record, and then press Play also? ( As opposed to the Standard "stay within current loop" mode, which is also handy )

It is equally important to create shorter tracks after having a recorded a longer one. This auto length recording mode should work both ways.
I also agree that the length should by default be quantised to whole bars.

AFAIK, the 'Record to Arranger' in 2.1 has this one covered.

I haven't tried it and can't at the moment, but from a look at the manual this seems mostly true. (The only odd thing might be that you'll end up with a bunch of white instances all of the length of the track you started from, instead of one long track.)

From the manual section on recording into arranger view:

If you adjust any track parameters or live-play any notes by MIDI, however, the corresponding track-instance is instantly cloned into a unique instance, and your adjustment is recorded into that new copy of the track which exists only in the arrangement, and will not affect the original track which exists in song view.

Edit: I just tried this, and it worked better than I expected. It created a single long white instance for as long as I ran the recording. The only odd thing is that it started right at the beginning of the arrangement, even though I didn't start playing until 4 bars in.
