MIDI learn function difficulty

Has anyone else had trouble getting the learn function to work when getting external gear to control the deluge. I am specifically trying to trigger song sections from a footpedal. I have tried various pedal and had no luck. Im sure im doing something simple which is wrong but cant seem to figure it out. Any help appreciated.

    You need midi notes for commands like play, rec, loop etc. and for mutes, triggering sections and such.
    And you need CC's for continuous parameter control.
