live recording without knowing track length "a priori"

I apologize if this question have been posted here before, but I couldn't find it.

Is it possible to record some notes while playing, and when the recording stops (by hitting the record button), the recorded part plays repeatedly, like a quantized loop? This would allow me to record "loops" on the fly, without the need to create a new track with a certain length.
For example, if I am playing some notes from a synth in a 16th-bar track, and want to record an 8th-bar loop, then I have to manually play the notes twice. However, if there is the possibility to record some notes on the fly and play the recorded part (of any length) automatically, that would allow a much better workflow for me.

I think this feature would GREATLY improve the functionality in live situations.

If this is not possible, do you have any suggestion on how could I record on the fly in a quick manner?
